Matson Ships During 1962 Strike

Matson ships in Honolulu Harbor during 1962 strike.

Dock Strike; 2 April 1962

Four Matson cargo ships are idled and tied up next to Pier 11 (on the left) due to a West Coast dock strike. Shipping strikes can cause severe economic problems in Hawai‘i, since ships are the primary carriers of the bulk of what is used and consumed in the islands. Air transport can only carry a fraction of the needed materials, and unlike most of the United States, no trucks or trains can serve Hawai‘i. (DeSoto Brown Collection)
