This is a ship with a fascinating history. She was built in the U. K. by the Upper Clyde Shipbuilding Co. for the U. S. Navy as part of a deal in which 5 ships were procured to help eliminate Britain’s war debt. She was put into service as the military survey ship USNS CHAUVENET (T-AGS 29) in 1970. She served until 1992. In 1996 she was converted into a maritime training ship named TEXAS CLIPPER. Found too small for their needs, she was laid up until 2006 when she was assigned to the DOD’s Missile Defense Agency and reactivated to be the PACIFIC COLLECTOR.
