Fraught With Danger – March 1889

The life of a maritime worker can be a hazardous one. Throughout history, accidents or physical violence at sea or on shore resulted in various types of injuries or sometimes even death.

As noted in the 30 March 1889 issue of The Daily Bulletin, a sailor was lost after falling overboard from a boat:

Moi Wahine was a 85-foot schooner built in 1886 by Captain Matthew Turner’s shipyard in Benicia, California.


Transcript:
A SAILOR DROWNED.
     The captain of the schooner Moi Wahine reports losing a native sailor at Waipio, Hawaii, while loading cargo.
     The man fell suddenly from one of the small boats into the water, and was not seen again.
