The name Ehime Maru will forever be linked to tragedy. The Ehime Maru previous to the one in the photos above was accidentally struck by the United States Navy submarine USS Greeneville on 9 February 2001 off the south coast of O‘ahu. The ship sank and nine people (four students, two teachers, and three crew) lost their lives.

For more details about the accident, please see the National Transportation Safety Board’s Marine Accident Brief DCA-01-MM-022.

There is a memorial, dedicated to those who were lost, located in Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park on O‘ahu. The anchor was recovered from the ship. The three arrows to the right of the anchor indicate (relative direction and distance) where the accident occurred, the ship’s ultimate resting place, and Aloha Tower.
