A Hui Hou Kaiwo Maru

The Japanese training ship Kaiwo Maru sailed from Honolulu Harbor on 10 May 2018.

Unfortunately, the crowd watching the departure was not treated to the impressive sight of the traditional manning of the ship’s yards. The decision to not man the yards was related to a tragic accident that occurred in Japan on board Nippon Maru in April. One of the ship’s cadets fell from aloft and sustained fatal injuries.

Instead, Kaiwo Maru’s crew and cadets bid everyone goodbye from their stations on deck.
