American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial

The American Merchant Marine Veterans Memorial is located in the John S. Gibson Park on the waterfront in San Pedro, California. It honors all United States merchant mariners who sailed on commercial vessels during times of war. It is important to recognize the crucial support these civilian crews and merchant vessels provided to military operations that put them in harm’s way.

Merchant Marine Vets Memorial sculpture

Bronze statue of two merchant mariners on a Jacob’s ladder which was designed by sculptor Jasper D’Ambrosi. He passed away shortly after the design was approved. It was completed by his sons, Marc and Michael. The maquette of the sculpture can be seen on display in the nearby Los Angeles Maritime Museum. 28 January 2023.

The memorial also includes a Wall of Honor inscribed with lists of names of the merchant mariners who were killed at sea or passed away later from injuries sustained in action, those taken as prisoners of war, and recipients of the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal.
