Aloha ARM Cuauhtémoc (BE-01)
The Armada de México’s (Mexican Navy) sail training ship, ARM Cuauhtémoc (1982, IMO 8107505) sailed from the Port of Acapulco, Mexico on 15 July 2026 and arrived at Honolulu Harbor on 7 August 2026. She is a three-masted barque. The ship was assisted to Pier 10 by Foss Maritime tugs Mikioi and Freedom.
This visit to Hawai‘i was ARM Cuauhtémoc’s first international port of call since the ship was damaged on 17 May 2025 when she allided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City. She was in the process of backing away from Pier 17 in Manhattan but was unable to stop her movement astern. All three of her masts struck the side of the bridge. Tragically, two of the ship’s crew members lost their lives and 19 others suffered injuries as a result of the accident.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating what caused the accident. It issued a preliminary report (DCA25MM039) that is available online: Contact of Mexican Navy ARM Cuauhtémoc BE 01 with the Brooklyn Bridge.
Maritime Hawai‘i loves sailing ships, so seeing ARM Cuauhtémoc again brought on a bunch of emotions including joy, because she looked wonderful, and sadness for the loss she suffered.
