Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. Crew

Crew of an Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. Ship, ca. 1930

The Inter-Island Steam Navigation Co. ships carried cargo and passengers between all the Hawaiian Islands (except Ni‘ihau) up until World War II. The crew members in this photo appear to only be the ones who were associated with serving passengers, judging by their spiffy, clean uniforms. Cabins and interior accommodations were comfortable, but the trips could be extremely rough, and if cattle were being carried on deck that added to the unpleasantness. Passengers could travel at extra low cost on the deck, but were exposed to the weather throughout. (DeSoto Brown Collection)

Mahalo to DeSoto Brown for the image and caption.

Do you have a passenger list or log for each one of your Steamers for the years 1890 to 1920? Is it available digitally for online viewing.

I was born on the 12 of May, 1935 aboard the S.S. WAIALEALE, on the return trip my parents (JAMES A AWANA AND CHRISTINE) were returning from Kauai to Oahu. If possible, I would like to get a copy of the ships log regarding my birth. I am 84 years old and would like to know (if anything) was logged regarding my birth. I do not much information except for one piece of infor my parents left me with. The purser (not sure of the spelling) whose name was Christen (spelling) allowed my parents to use his room for my birth. Would appreciate your help. Might be a nice piece of history for my family and yours. MAHALO AND ALOHA, JAMES AHINA AWANA JR

    Aloha Mr. Awana,

I will have to do some research to find out if and where the Inter-Island Steam Navigation ship logs are archived.

I do have access to online newspapers and found that an announcement of your birth was published in both the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin. It says:

“AWANA—Aboard S. S. Waialeale, May 12, to Mr. and Mrs. James Ahina Awana, 1030 Queen St., son—James Ahina.”

I will let you know if I find anything else.

Thank you very much for that info. Do you have the date of the notice in the Advertiser and Honolulu Star Bulletin? Thank you. JAMES A AWANA JR

My great grandfather, John Henry Haake, was the Maritime Captain for the Inter Island Steamship Navigation Company. The crew picture I saw just wondered if there are pictures of the Captain John Henry Haake who was working for them 20 years 1898-1918.
If you could email me: @yahoo.com Appreciate. Mahalo! 4/27/2021

      Aloha Eloise,
I also have a great-grandfather John Philip Haake, born Nov 1871 in Makawao, Maui and died June 24, 1901 in Kalaupapa, Molokai at age 29, possibly of tuberculosis.
Am seeking confirmation on Captain John Haake, a Captain of schooner, Labrador. I recently found this information in ‘Opium Kings of Old Hawaii’ by John Madinger. An arrest was made in 1898 and Captain John Haake was detained in jail with 5 years of hard labor.
You’ve noted that Captain John Henry Haake captained in 1898 through 1918.
