San Francisco Recap

San Francisco Ferry Building

A view of San Francisco’s iconic Ferry Building from the water. Completed in 1898, it still serves as a terminal for ferry services. It also houses shops, restaurants, and offices. Note: The historic Matson Building can be seen behind the letters “CISCO.” It is topped by a belvedere with cupola. 19 April 2017.

Last month, Maritime Hawai‘i attended the Council of American Maritime Museums’ (CAMM) 2017 conference, which was held in San Francisco, California from April 19 to 21.

The sessions were interesting, informative, and covered a range of topics such as fundraising, preservation of collections, institutional partnerships, and digitizing assets. Dr. Matthew James gave a brief update on the status of Falls of Clyde.

Other highlights included short tours of the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s ship Balclutha, steam tug Hercules, schooner CA Thayer, and steam ferry Eureka; a reception and Bay cruise on board Red and White Fleet boat Royal Prince; and a cruise on board the historic presidential yacht, USS Potomac.

Maritime Hawai‘i was pleased to see and talk with previous acquaintances and was happy to make new ones.
