Manoa Hatch Cover

Manoa hatch cover

A lift-away hatch cover is lowered on to Matson’s Manoa at Pier 52, Honolulu Harbor. 25 April 2021.

Hatch covers such as the one above are used to close off the ship’s cargo holds and help to prevent water from entering the ship.

The hatch covers are removed using a gantry crane if containers need to be loaded into or unloaded out of the cargo holds. They are set out of the way on the pier until it is time to place them back on board the ship.

When they are secured, additional containers can be loaded on to them.
