Today marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

Most of the general public are unaware of the important part that mariners played on that terrible day. The maritime community evacuated people by boat from Lower Manhattan and provided much needed support to first responders.

Carolina Salguero* was there on the water that day and documented what she saw and experienced. She created and maintains a permanent online exhibit that details the 9/11 maritime response, which was overlooked by mainstream news outlets at the time.

Ms. Salguero is committed to highlighting the importance of the contributions mariners made immediately after the attack and in the months that followed.

Whalen, which is currently berthed in the Atlantic Basin in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Maritime Hawai‘i had the pleasure to visit the ship in 2016.
