Essayons* is a hopper dredger operated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Based in Portland, Oregon, the ship is used to maintain estuaries, rivers, and harbors in the states of Alaska, California, Hawai‘i, Oregon, and Washington.

A hopper dredger is a vessel designed to suck up loose material, such as sediment or sand, from the bottom via drag heads connected to drag arms. The material is pumped up through the drag arms and deposited into hoppers located on board the ship. The ship can then transport the contents of the hoppers to a designated disposal location.

*“Essayons” is a French word meaning “let us try.” It is the motto of the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
