New Bedford Commercial Fishing

New Bedford, Massachusetts, once known for the major part it played in the nineteenth-century whaling industry, now consistently leads the nation in terms of the total value of the commercial fishing catch brought into the port each year.

The metal ring mesh at the stern of the boat at right is a distinctive part of a scallop dredge. The dredge is towed along the bottom of the ocean in order to collect the scallops. 27 April 2026.
