When You Least Expect It…Lihue!

If you have ordered anything via the Internet, chances are you have received emails from retailers requesting that you consider buying additional items.

A little while back, the following arrived in Maritime Hawai‘i’s inbox:

The blue bag is certainly quite nice, but it was the ship and cranes (Port of Oakland, we assume) in the background that caught our attention.

If you are familiar with Matson’s fleet, you will recognize her as Lihue.

She was acquired by Matson in 1995 as part of an agreement with APL (American President Lines). She was originally built in 1971 as a LASH* ship, but now carries containers between Hawai‘i and California.


*Lighter Aboard Ship. A lighter is a type of barge.
