100 Years Ago – Body of a Sailor Found

As noted in the 20 January 1921 issue of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, the body of Kauwi (Kaiwi) Mu was found floating in Honolulu Harbor off Pier 12.

At the time of his death, Mu was employed as a sailor on board the Inter-Island Steam Navigation Company’s ship, SS Claudine.

The body of Kauwi Mu, one of the best known sailors of the Honolulu waterfront, was found floating off the end of Pier 12 this morning. He had evidently been dead for several days.
Mu was a Hawaiian, about 55 years of age. He had been a sailor here for more than 30 years. For a considerable time he had been working on the inter-island steamer Claudine.
Dan Kaleiki, first mate of the Claudine, said Mu missed the boat when it sailed for Maui last Monday.
